(From Southern News Service)
Praised by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as an “ambitious author to watch,” Anne Valente will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, in Room 413 of Spiva Library as part of the Saltzman Visiting Writers Series at Missouri Southern State University.
Her novel “Our Hearts will Burn Us Down” was an Amazon Best Books of the Month selection and a Midwest Connection Pick. Her collection “By Light We Knew Our Names” won the Dzanc Books Short Story Prize. Originally from St. Louis, she currently teaches creative writing and literature at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.
During her campus visit, she will read from “Our Hearts Will Burn Us Down.” A Q&A session and book signing will follow. Copies of her books will be available for purchase.
The Saltzman Visiting Writers Series is hosted by the English & Philosophy Department. Dr. Brad Modlin said that the St. Louis-born Valente was a good fit for the series.
“She writes about the comforts of Midwestern communities and the challenges of life,” he said. “Concerned with the unasked questions after tragedies, her fiction finds the humans behind the headlines.
“She’s a terrific reader who continues our tradition of bringing strong writers to campus.”
