On October 19, 2015, during a recognition ceremony, Sheriff Randee Kaiser presented the life saving award to Deputy Ryan Mercer for his actions when he applied a tourniquet and started CPR on a victim of a self inflicted accidental gun shot.
Sheriff Kaiser also presented the Sheriff's commendation award to Deputy Micah Fleming. Deputy Fleming was off duty shopping at Best Buy in Joplin, when he recognized a homicide suspect.
Deputy Fleming called 911 and followed the suspect until the suspect left the store and gave a description of the suspects vehicle, license plate and direction of travel.
The suspect was taken into custody a few hours later after a brief man hunt.
Other award winners ( not pictured) were Dep. Keith Maggard, who received the Sheriff's commendation for all of his hard work that included assisting Patrol on calls for service, scheduling and working the inmate cemetery details and assisting maintenance with working on jail projects.
Dep. Stephen Jennings received the merit award for his work with the citizens academy.
